The Chicago case was brought to the court by Otis McDonald, a retired African-American man who lives in a dangerous neighborhood and wants a gun to defend himself. Mayor Daley and gun control supporters call it a safety issue and say it will only lead to more violent crime. The gun ban has been in effect for 30 years.

I could dazzle you with statistics, but it will only make you dizzy and unable to shoot straight. I don’t care which side you are on, there are truckloads of statistics. There is only one stat I would like to know. What percentage of rapists, thieves, and murderers would choose not to attack a person because that person was armed?

If all grannies are armed there will be accidents. Grannies with cars have accidents. Grannies with bathtubs have accidents. Really, the government just needs to ban accidents. The gun control issue is that absurd.

The Supreme Court is dealing with this as a 2nd Amendment issue. There are those who try to say that the authors of the Constitution did not have private citizens in mind when they wrote this. They argue today that the Amendment should be applied to groups like the National Guard. I can’t respect this view. Do you really believe that the rural people of the 18th century were being discouraged in any way from owning firearms? Forget human threats, they had to defend themselves against wild animals.

There is only one question that matters. Does a citizen have a right to protect his family with a gun? How can anyone say no to this? Gun safety is a secondary issue. Hopefully, anyone purchasing a gun would learn how to properly use it. I have had guns my whole life. I still take my sons shooting on our farm in Tennessee.

The gang violence in Chicago is tragic. Many of the deaths are innocent school kids just being kids. I have noticed one obvious truth about a gang member with a gun – they can’t hit the side of a barn! But then, where would they practice? Are there shooting ranges for gang bangers? I have often said that if I ever have to engage in a gun battle, I pray that it is with gang members. I will win that battle every time. I am a marksman, my gun will not jam, and I will defend my property and family without hesitation.

The only gun issue for me is what to do with the idiots. A certain percentage of people, like gang members, will do dumb things. Stupid acts with guns will end in people being wounded or dead. I don’t know the answer to that, but the answer is not to take away my guns. It is no reason to deny Otis either.
